Hopewell Rocks — the same rocks, twice a day.

On the New Brunswick side of the upper Bay of Fundy, the Hopewell Rocks are the bay's most famous landmark. Twice a day the tide drops far enough to walk on the ocean floor between the flowerpot formations — then rises 12 metres to float kayaks around the same towers.

At the rocks

At low tide, staircases lead down onto the sea floor and you can walk among the sandstone flowerpots — some over 20 metres tall, capped with balsam fir and dwarf birch. Six hours later the same viewpoint is 12 metres underwater and only kayaks can reach the towers.

Best time to visit

Arrive up to three hours before low tide and stay through the turn
Mid-May to mid-October is the full open season
Weekday mornings are the quietest
Check the daily tide chart at the interpretive centre before heading down
